Artist Statement
I am interested in the psychological resonance of abstract and realistic seeming situations. I’m also exploring themes of memory and identity through the process of layering. In the same way putting on a costume encourages the wearer to assume the role of someone or something else, layers of a painting can react with and influence each other. Beginning with the experiences in my childhood Halloween costumes, I’ve been intrigued by the way a costume changes how I act and view myself or others. It gives me an experience akin to looking through someone else’s eyes and discovering things about them and also myself. The layers of a painting can distort, reveal or conceal the final “identity” of the piece.
